The Parole System in Malaysia is based on the Australian system. It was introduced to reduce overcrowding in prisons and a high maintenance cost borne by the Prisons Department and the Government of Malaysia.
The Parole System is implemented under the Prison Act (Amendment) 2008. The amendment to the act received royal assent on 24 January 2008 and was published in the gazette on 7 February 2008.
The Parole System came into effect on 30 June 2008. Its smooth and systematic implementation will help facilitate the reintegration of prisoners into their families and society and this is one of the crucial aspects in the rehabilitation process of prisoners.
