Clarification from YB Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed Deputy Minister of Home Affairs

In relation to several media reports making reference to my remarks during the press conference at the 6th MIMA South China Sea Conference 2017 on 04 October 2017, I wish to mention the following:

1. My respond to the question posed by one of the journalists that “China claim on almost the entirety of the resource–rich waters, which is an important shipping route with trade value of about US$5 trillion per year”, was my personal view.

2. It is regrettable that my personal view was quoted as such and misconstrued as the official position or policy of the Government of Malaysia.

3. As the media fraternity would appreciate, the Government of Malaysia’s position and policy on matters relating to the South China Sea is clear and consistent. Amongst others:

3.1 Malaysia is committed to address matters relating to the South China through peaceful means, and call on all countries to ensure peace, security and stability, to avoid the threat or use of force, to exercise self–restraint in the conduct of activities, and to refrain from action that erodes trust and confidence, complicates the situation and escalates tension.

3.2 Malaysia uphold the supremacy of the rule of law and reaffirm that all claims in the South China Sea must be based on and resolved in accordance with international law, including in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS).

4. It is also regrettable that my personal view that countries bordering the South China Sea should work together in ensuring the protection and conservation of the marine environment and the living resources was not only been reported inaccurately but was simplified to the point as if I am advocating for a joint development of resources in the South China Sea.

5. I wish to also take this opportunity to inform the media fraternity that matters relating to the South China Sea is under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia.

YB Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs
